Overcoming anxiety attacks can seem near impossible if you're a chronic sufferer. But there are many ways of treating anxiety and the first and most important step is yourself. If you suffer from anxiety attacks continuously, sometimes it's just easier to pretend that you've got some sort of chronic physical illness that you can do nothing about.

Don't misunderstand, you are suffering from a chronic illness but it's not really a physical illness, although you most certainly have physical anxiety symptoms. Instead, anxiety attacks are more along the lines of a chronic mental illness. Again, don't misunderstand - you don't need to be checked in at the nearest looney bin. What you do need is proper anxiety treatment and help in overcoming anxiety attacks when you get them.

There are many anxiety treatments available to aid in coping with anxiety nowadays. However, as I said earlier, the first step is to admit to yourself that you're dealing with anxiety. Once you can do that, you can take the next logical step and admit that you need help. Treating anxiety attacks isn't easy and doing it alone is even more difficult.

To start a proper course of treatment you'll need to get an accurate diagnosis of your condition first. Without this any treatment that you get could be the wrong one for you and could also prove to be potentially harmful to you in the long run. So before you start experimenting or buying any kind of drug, go see your doctor first.

He or she should be able to help you and will also be able to steer you towards the right path. Self-diagnosis is the worst kind there is and if you're at a stage where you can admit that you need help and can talk to someone else about it then your doctor could potentially be one of those people.

So, what treatment options are available, and which one is right for you? Well, a lot of that is personal preference. You see, there are many good anti-anxiety medications available now in the benzodiazepine family like Xanax, Ativan, and Klonopin, There are also many good medications indicated for anxiety in the SSRI family. But, many people are opposed to taking any kind of anxiety drugs for fear of addiction or just the stigma of "needing" a medication.

If anxiety drugs are not the answer for you, there are also a lot of natural anxiety remedies that many have found to be very helpful. There are many herbs for anxiety that have had great success. Some are: chamomile, valerian, lavender, St. John's wort, kava kava, and many, many more. Many people like to take one or a combination of these herbs in a tea. Many people have found these herbs to be quite relaxing, which is exactly what you need when you're having an anxiety attack.

Whatever approach you take to overcoming anxiety attacks, remember the only sure way to overcoming anxiety attacks is to at least try, and eventually through trial and error and your own strength of mind you can find the right path for you.
